Open Source blows my mind every time I explain it, at which point the recipient’s mind becomes equally blown away. I still haven’t wrapped my head completely around it, but that’s OK because there’s a passionate community ready to help someone like me work through the grey areas. I guess, actually, that’s why Open Source is so vital for me as an Automattician—it’s about a diverse community overcoming obstacles in pursuit of a common focus. And that focus is WordPress. Yes, it’s just software, but it’s also the realization of an ideal, it’s the result of committed humans that labored to enable others to create, to build, and to share.
We need love; old fashioned, self-sacrificing love. Not the emotion, but rather the physical action.
Empathy. Without empathy, there is no inclusion, and there are no relationships. Until we understand others (their culture, the factors that impact their lives, and the genesis of their emotions) we will fail at what it means to be ourselves—to be human.
As far as digital products go, I dig the iPhone. It connects me to life in ways a knife just can’t.
While I live in Southern California and consider myself a designer, an explorer, and a facilitator, I am probably best described by my relationships. I am a husband, and a father, a student and a teacher. I ask lots of questions, and make lots of mistakes. But most importantly, I do things. I’ve helped three different startups reach success, and I’ve impacted the health industry with an iOS app called Eat Your Greens. I hope to continue building things, solving problems, and contributing to open source communities.
