I’ve learned so much about Open Source after seeing its principles applied at Automattic over the last two years. It just makes sense. The code you write, like the words you write, has exponentially more influence when it is made available to the largest number of people possible.
Empathy and understanding. Our products should reward the deepening of relationships, not just the quantity of them.
Everything begins with education—what we teach future generations about what we’ve done right and wrong. We still undervalue it.
I started my career as a newspaper reporter, so I have focused on journalism and how it can educate. Great reporting exposes us to voices and worlds that are not our own.
We are in a difficult media environment right now, where the most important work is often the most costly. The business model is under great pressure. I am interested in the ways our ecosystem will continue to evolve and ensure these stories are still reported.
NY City Bus / I just finished Street Fight, the fantastic book by former NYC transportation commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, so I want to give a special design shout-out to the city bus. It is one of the most undervalued, and most universally accessible, forms of public transportation in the world. It moves people around our largest and smallest cities, it empowers those who cannot drive themselves, and it is more efficient than a small-occupancy car. They’re cheaper to build and maintain than rail. They’re the new Uber!
The iPhone / Is it totally unoriginal to say the iPhone? It transformed everything in our lives! I mean, I was still writing out directions to people’s houses in 2005.
