Most of us became designers to help improve the world. Open Source provides each of us with this opportunity, and sets an example of how designing more openly and transparently can give a voice to anyone in the world, while remaining a completely voluntary system— “freedom” in every sense. It embodies the way I approach life:
“The best way to complain is to make things.”
— James Murphy
It’s human nature to surround yourself with people who agree with you, but we need diversity of thought to avoid the echo chamber.
More curiosity. Being curious and actively seeking to understand the world and it’s people broadens your perspective and engenders empathy.
My Pentel GraphGear1000 Pencil / As a part-time nomad and full-time minimalist, I’m very particular about the physical objects I choose to buy and carry. Things I own need to be both multi-purposeful and long-lasting. This pencil can be used for anything from sketching for work to filling out a customs form, and I’ve had it for over 5 years now with no signs of wear. It feels great to use and is beautifully designed.
The Kindle / I’m an avid reader and I’ve always loved “real” books. (One of my favorite Automattic moments was a side trip to the Oxford Library at a meetup earlier this year.) I was hesitant to switch to an eReader, but several years ago, when I started traveling full time, I decided to make the leap. I purchased a Kindle and never looked back. A few weeks later, I was able to download any book I wanted from a generator-powered island in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
I’m a nomadic product designer and photographer based in San Diego, California. After a brief interlude with Computer Science, I went on to study Cognitive Science and Human-Computer Interaction at UCSD, spending the next 10 years as a UX consultant before eventually joining Automattic. I currently lead a team of designers working on WordPress.com and other products. I blog at briedemkiw.com.
