Open Source is the foundation of everything we do. The idea that you can take something, break it apart, figure out what everything does, and then rebuild it? It inspired an entire generation of hackers and builders and makers. Our work is about improving the world—you can’t do that if everything you build is hidden away to all but a privileged few.
More racially, culturally, and economically diverse designers.
The Offset Printing Press / For the life of me I can’t find an image of the offset press we used for monotype and linocut prints in college, but that’s what I’m thinking of. I loved the feeling of rolling the blanket over my plate and then transferring it back down onto paper. No need to reverse your image—it shows it as you inked or carved it. I love the perfect registration you can get so each print is even. It’s just such a perfect machine.
Smartphones / Specifically, the iPhone. Is that a cop-out? It really has transformed our lives more than even personal computers, I think.
I’m a Boston-based product designer and WordPress core contributor. I graduated from Smith College with a degree in Government in 2010, then went on to work for a few web design agencies and consultancies. In early 2013 I did Fresh Tilled Soil’s Apprenticeship in User Experience, after which I applied to Automattic. I currently work on customization and new user experience for WordPress.com. I blog at melchoyce.design.
